Since 2007 Project Helping Hands has been sending teams to Oyugis- area of West Central Kenya the rapidly growing commercial and financial center of the Rachuonyo South District in Western Kenya.

Our team Leader Anne-Marie Summerhays is leading her ninth team to the region. PHH volunteers teach community health sessions and provide health, dental, and vision services with a set up a week-long clinic that serve, in he past, over 1000 patients.

The Oyugis, October 2017 trip is a continuation of our work in this region.

Trip Details

The team will arrive at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport late in the evening.  Once the team has cleared customs  they will be transported to a nearby guest house where they will spend their first night in Kenya.  The following morning you will load back into the vans and be transported into the community of Oyugis which will serve are your home base for the majority of your time in Kenya.

The team will walk from the hotel in Oyugis each day out and back to the clinic site at "Hope Station", wich is about a 2.5 mile walk each direction. We will be providing healthcare to the orphans and education to the community, including a local school and possibly an orphanage.    

Near the end of the trip the team will be transported to the great Rift Valley and meet the "Masai Mara" people and experience the wildlife of the Masai Mara reserve.

 The final day the team is transported back to Nairobi for their flights home.

Also known as Masai Mara and by the locals as The Mara, is a large game reserve in Narok County, Kenya

The final day the team is transported back to Nairobi for their flights home.

Skill Requirements

The primary focus for this team is to provide general health care and health education services. We seek licensed health care professionals including but not limited to the following!

  • Physicians
  • Nurse Practitioners
  • Physician Assistants
  • Dentists
  • RN's
  • Occupational Therapists
  • EMS Personnel
  • Student Nurses
  • Interpreters
  • Non-Medical Support Personnel

We welcome both medical and non-medical volunteers with a spirit of adventure and determination to partake in a culturally sensitive growth opportunity while helping others in need of our services.  Above all you must be willing to work as a team for the common goal of our mission!

Trip Rating

This trip require a level of fitness to be able to participate in the activities as describe:

  • Amount of in-country travel:  The team will be staying at the same Hotel in the town during the duration of the trip. The team will walk approximately 2.5 miles to the clinic site . You must be in good condition to do this daily walk.
  • Sleeping arrangements: Team members will stay at a hotel in Oyugis where bedding is supplied.
  • Running water, electricity and AC: Running water and electricity will be available but may be intermittent at times. Internet service is possible but not guaranteed. AC will not be available.
  • Physical requirements:  The physical activity level for this team is rated at Moderate. Team members should be able to tolerate hot and humid weather. (temperatures average between 85 & 95 degrees) Team members may be asked to assist in lifting heavy luggage and must walk to and from the clinic site each day (sometimes in rainy/muddy conditions)
